shimashima Profile

shimashima is a collective of designers from Japan , Sweden and the UK with a common goal - to bring joy & thought home.

Shimashima ? means stripes in Japanese -We chose the group name as we collated our first project together in 2006 where we produced items in pairs or utilized repetition as in shimashima, repeated lines.

As a group we reflect e shimashima' - simple individuality. We have a similar ethos to design too, we look in the same direction and once we are together we balance each other and create beautiful harmony. Our design ethos is to create beautiful, useable, everyday objects, which can make life more interesting, creative and enjoyable. We hope that our shimashima home welcomes you in.

Ghost lamp

I played with different layers and light and liked how something can look plain on the outside but if you put a light inside, it can reveal something new. In this case little ghosts, who normally only come out when it is dark, surprise you when you turn the light on.

The prices are for the shades only, they come in three sizes: 155 x 210mm: 50.00, 182 x 160mm: 55, 210 x 110mm: 60. The materials are paper and perspex.

Shoe Tree-Tree

Sometimes it feels like the mountain of shoes in the hallway just keeps growing, where do they all come from? They clearly need a home and so I've made the eShoe Tree-Tree'. As a vine it meanders down over the door and you can hang your shoes off its shoe tree shaped efruits'

Small batch production runs available on order, guide price 700.00 , can be customised. Larger production runs on enquiery.

The materials are Stainless Steel and wood or resin, original measurements 503 x 1050mm, holds four pair of shoes.

My egg & soldiers kit

I always thought soldiers are not looked after. Eggs have various choices of cups, but what about poor soldiers? Don't you think it's not really fair that soldiers often have to lie down on a plate? They look sad and already lost before battling with an egg.

Good soldiers need royal horses and a tasty egg needs to be in a humble castle. I just provided something where they should be and I think they look much happier and more comfortable in them.

The material: Earthenware clay, available in White or Natural finish

Made in Cornwall , England

Ready for production and looking for wholesales

hatena t-towel collection

T-towels are everyday commodities. They are sometimes overlooked and can be a very unexciting item. This collection of designs is inspired by a part of my nostalgic child memory. I remember when I was small I had all these fascinating questions over one tiny thing and wanted to find out the answer to it. I like Rainy days. Suddenly, many puddles appear here and there. It might be silly and unexciting for grown-ups but, these overlooked subjects are so interesting and magical for small people or for me. I hope hatena t-towel collection could tickle your imagination and give you a little smile.

The sizes: approximately 450mm X 650mm

Hand printed and produced by Takae Mizutani

My little planet vase

This is a vase, a little planet vase for an ordinary little flower, which is often over looked by most people. I wish that with this vase a little ordinary flower could become very special to you. This product was inspired by one of my favorite stories and very special homage to the author... (I think many of those who read this story already guessed) The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

linked to both nostalgia & memories, Chiaki's "leave your footmark on a globe" & "the key to my lamp" are both about unlocking & re-experiencing old memories & positively reinforcing them.

inspired by trips in her 1973 vw campervan this summer, "Justin Case" was created - everything when camping needs more than one use, a double life, just in case.  Recycling found, lost, or unwanted items to create "new" domestic objects to bring a smile.
